Rooms with dressing room | The fusion of two spaces with new uses
The division of the spaces has been left behind to leave the door open to the houses where the uses flow and integrate with the aim of offering a new interaction with the user. User who forms the central axis when deciding how spaces will be articulated from contemporary conceptions in architecture and interior design.
What practices are common for future users of the spaces? What difficulties do you currently have? As if it were an anthropologist, our job as interior designers involves understanding deeply the ways of doing, tastes and preferences of the people who will inhabit the spaces we design. It is about understanding your particular world, your way of understanding your environment and interacting with it.
To put it in some way, we conducted a qualitative study to identify those needs that the user is not even aware of. Knowing how to propose and solve a set of questions when carrying out a interior design project is a guarantee that it will end up existing a kind of symbiosis between housing and user.
In this sense, and taking into account the shared ways of seeing the world and living, the integration of the dressing room in the bedroom gains ground . A project solution that mistakenly seems reserved exclusively for projects that have a large space and budget.
However, with imagination and regardless of unused areas of passage, have a dressing room integrated into the bedroom appears as a plausible option without many square meters or a high purchasing power.
Something that we have had the good fortune to verify throughout our projects is that integrating the functions of a dressing room in the bedroom is possible in most cases providing the benefits space amplitude, functionality and use of space.
Having a dressing room is no longer exclusive or synonymous with luxury
One of the keys is to stop understanding the dressing room as another room adjacent to the bedroom that functions as a large closet. For this we must think more about surfaces than rooms with three or four walls. And also in shared spaces rather than in separate spaces. It would be rather the same space with different uses.
Thus, in some cases the dressing room can be integrated as a space inside the bedroom, in others it is even merged with the toilet and, if the space is smaller or open, it can be understood in a modular way with the distribution caused by the arrangement of the furniture. In any case, thinking differently of the passage areas gives us grounds to recover space for more specific uses than simply the connection that is largely an effect of our practices rather than the arrangement of the walls.
Redefining the use of dressing room The dressing room is a space that has double function. On the one hand, it serves as a place for storage and exhibition of clothing, shoes or toilet elements. On the other, as an extension of the bedroom, the dressing room acquires a dimension of being intimate. Thus, with the inclusion of an armchair, a bench or a pouf, the dressing room becomes a space to stop for a moment, where to review some notes, where to converse with who is dressing. An enclave where to stop and dedicate time to oneself. In this sense, from the interior we can promote new uses and thus new functions.
Guide | Some key aspects to win a dressing room in the bedroom
Open your mind
Put aside preconceived images, rescues the function and remains receptive to proposals for shared spaces.
Look around you
Even if you find it impossible, the corridor, the laundry room or an interior patio can be essential allies to gain the necessary meters to generate a dressing room
Make your life to measure
We often limit ourselves to what we see and not to what we imagine. The custom furniture design opens the door to rethink seated structures such as a built-in wardrobe or a partition between the bedroom and the bathroom, when a low furniture can expand and completely transform the space.
Try to get the largest possible diaphanous space by pulling unnecessary partitions and distribute and zonify the space by arranging the furniture.
Enlighten with intention
In addition to the furniture, the light and its arrangement is essential to settle any zoning. Through different lighting scenes we delimit spaces and favor certain practices whether relaxing or attention if we are making up, reading a book or trying new shirts.
In short, it is interesting to start with the user’s practices to define the space, since these are the ones that will end up giving meaning to a specific layout and distribution of the elements. The possibility of merging the bedroom and the dressing room into a shared space taking advantage of other wasted spaces reverts in a maximization of the perception of space and in the redefinition of a space of being and interaction in the intimate area of the house. After all, the user or inhabitant is at the center of any interior design proposal.
