Illumination in the bathroom | We analyze the formula for a good lighting strategy
The lighting strategy of the bathroom can facilitate its use at a functional and distributive level, as well as creating a decoration where light flows with visual stimuli.
So, in this post, we propose some points that we consider central when implementing a lighting strategy in the bathroom . While it is true that each architecture and interior design project has its own peculiarities according to their preferences, budgets, disposition and technical limitations, in Coblonal Interior Design we try to find common ingredients from which to work and adapt them to any project. It is about finding a starting formula to transform for each case, since the design of spaces seeks timelessness precisely in the capacity for transformation and not in a static disposition.
In this sense, the light of the bathroom is an interesting topic since we start from a space generally of limited dimensions, but for which we have already assumed the presence of different lighting scenes. In the immense majority of bathrooms it is usual to find at least one general light and another more intense one in the mirror area, in the style of a dressing table. Starting from this base, the bathroom it is presented as an ideal setting to incorporate functions and lighting possibilities and to serve as an example to export to other areas of the home and thus contribute to a better quality of life for its inhabitants.
The importance of good lighting in the bathroom
First of all, when we say good lighting, what do we mean exactly? In general and according to our particular conception: to a planned light that serves the practices of people who inhabit a certain space. Thanks to correct lighting, these practices or activities increase their quality thanks to the planning and treatment of light.
Thus, we believe that a good lighting strategy helps to create a dynamic space that adjusts to the different moments of daily activity and at the same time allows to recreate more specific spaces such as, for example, an environment specially designed for rest and relaxation. The key is to understand interior design as a discipline that puts its emphasis on the dynamic, on the procedural, on the change rather than on the permanence.
Dimensions to take into account when planning the light
Natural Light | Natural light is the best layer of organic paint to support the decorative, distributive and functional strategy. In this sense, in our study we prefer to make a preliminary study to take advantage of natural light, let it flow and create canvases where it can bounce to enhance it. Natural and artificial light can be complementary in a shared use attending different scenes.
For it and as it is foreseeable, the clear tones, the wide mirrors and the glass screens are good allies to maximize the diffusion and use of natural light if we have it, either by a direct window to the outside or an opening to the adjoining room. Natural light is usually a very scarce option for most bathrooms, because for comfort and regulations it is preferable to take advantage of outdoor openings for rooms and social areas. But look for an opening in height to an adjoining room is an option that if you have it should be an option to contemplate.
Dimensions of the bathroom | If the bathroom is small, it may be sufficient to place one general light and one for the dressing table. On the other hand, as the dimensions increase, we can change the strategy and resort to a light arrangement that incorporates more uses and areas. In any case, the basic lighting strategy we could add a very dim light for the hours of dusk to illuminate the minimum essential and preserve the conditions for sleep. Think of a suite room in which those who share it have different schedules or, in families with small children who wake up at night to go to the bathroom and do not want to be discouraged.
Position of the lights so as not to create shadows | The situation of the luminaires in the different volumes must take into account not creating shaded areas that do not have their own lighting.
Zoning according to uses | With the increasing integration of spaces, the bathroom suite is increasingly integrated into a set with the bedroom and the dressing room. The three spaces collaborate and share surface in a single joint piece. In this way, our lighting strategy must address this interconnection and take advantage of shared resources, as well as their specific needs.
Emotional dimension | The bathroom, far from being just a place of cleanliness, also acquires a dimension related to the care of oneself, a refuge where to rest. In this way, lighting also functions as an indispensable resource to recreate a propitious environment.
Some keys to the lighting of the bathroom as a summary
- Take advantage of direct or indirect natural light through a translucent opening or window
- Draw a joint strategy with the adjacent rooms with which it shares space
- Design different scenes according to daily practices, taking into account the different time zones, as well as the needs for cleanliness and relaxation.
- Being a room with special conditions in terms of humidity and temperature, it is essential to use lamps and bulbs with materials resistant to these conditions, because safety must always be the first premise.
